ont> Louis Conard : Paris, 1923 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A smart edition of Gustave Flaubert's influential nineteenth century novel. With Bloomsbury Group association. This novel is from the 'Oeuvres Completes de Gustave Flaubert' series. Bound by Ralph Partridge, an amateur bookbinding enthusiast and central figure of the Bloomsbury group. Partridge worked for Virginia and Leonard Woolf. He was first married to the English painter Dora Carrington with whom he had a menage a trois with Lytton Strachey. Partridge was the unrequited love of Strachey for many years. Whilst married to Carrington, Partridge fell in love with Frances Marshall. He married her in 1894. In a letter to Partridge from Virginia Woolf dated 29 June 1925 she asks him to 'send me a list of your terms for binding books'. Written to the recto of front endpaper is 'Bound by Ralph Partridge'. With the signature of Frances Marshall, later known as Frances Partridge. She is best known for the publication of her diaries which detailed her life within the Bloomsbury circle. She first met Ralph Partridge whilst working at a London bookshop owned by David Garnett and Francis Birrell. In the original French. L'Education Sentimentale' was first published in 1869. It was praised by Flaubert's contemporaries, George Sand and Emile Zola. It focuses on the romantic life of a young man living through the French Revolution of 1848. Condition: In a quarter morocco binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, generally smart. Small loss to the spine label and paper to the boards. Light shelfwear to the spine. Front hinge is strained but firm. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, Frances Marshall 1924. Second inscription reads 'Bound by Ralph Partridge'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Light scattered spots to the first and last few pages. Otherwise, just the odd spot. Overall Condition: Very Good.
