In this work, Locke outlines his theory of the mind. He contended that the gentleman's mind was a tabula rasa or a blank slate; that is, it did not contain any innate ideas. For over a century, it was the most important philosophical work on education in England and Europe. The influence of Locke's ideas on education is seen on every European writer on education after Locke, including Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who acknowledged its influence.
