Spotting and staining to early and closing leaves of each volume, author's name inscribed to title page, first quire of vol.1 misbound, otherwise a very good clean copy. Attractive copy of St.Leger's increasingly uncommon final novel, the last before his untimely death at the age of thirty following an epileptic seizure.

Portrait frontis and a handful of head and tail pieces by Herbert Cole. Finely bound in early full dark brown morocco by Zaehnsdorf. Raised bands on spine, each with gilt piping. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt double ruled borders on boards with elaborate floral corner pieces. Board edges ruled in gilt. Burgundy silk endpapers. Decorative gilt tooled borders and floral design to turn-ins. Top edge gilt. A fine and attractive binding.

Some foxing to the plain tissue paper guard over the frontispiece and a few minor spots throughout but overall a very clean and bright copy in a fine late 19th century leather binding. Full red calf, the spine with five raised bands, each with double rope design in gilt. Compartments ruled and fully decorated in gilt. Dark green morocco title label, gilt. Leaf and rose roll gilt borders on boards. Decorative gilt design on board edges. Decorative blind stamped inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Red silk page marker bound in.
