New York: [Fellowship of Reconciliation], 1946. 8.5x11 inch leaflet, minor toning and edgewear, reproduced from typescript. To protest the introduction of legislation for permanent peacetime conscription, the co-signers of the statement (twenty names listed) "propose to break with conscription now. In January we shall get rid of our draft credentials publicly, by returning them to the president, accompanied by a letter of explanation, or disposing of them in open demonstrations. We hope to see demonstrations organized in our local communities to dramatize the importance of this event... We understand fully that this is serious, that we are undertaking a program of civil disobedience..." Asks readers to write in if they wish to add their names to the list of endorsers pledging to participate. The contact listed in the text is George M. Houser, the Methodist minister and civil rights activist who had co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality in 1942. On this flyer he was acting on behalf of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, which is not named, but the contact address is 2929 Broadway in NY, the Fellowship's address. Undated, but handwritten note attributes to late 1946.
