About This Item

Los Alamos, NM: Los Alamos National Laboratory, 2005. Presumed First Edition, First printing. DVD RW. Very good. 2 files--one a printable version of the other, each about 67,300 KB. UNCLASSIFIED. The Laboratory Directed Research & Development (LDRD) Program at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) reports each year on the progress of each of the R&D projects supported by the Program. This introduction to those reports for federal fiscal year (FY) 2005 includes an overview of the program as a whole, its basis in legislation, and its contributions to the Laboratory's science and technology base. The project reports themselves are grouped by the five disciplinary categories in which the LANL/LDRD is organized (Chemistry and Materials Sciences (CMS), Environmental and Biological Sciences (EBS), Information Science and Technology (IST), Physics (PHY), and Technology and, within these categories, by the three main programmatic components of LDRD at LANL (Directed Research (DR), Exploratory Research, and Postdoctoral Research and Development (PRD)). Projects that ended in FY 2005 are included in each section. There is also a listing of the projects and their principal investigators (PIs) as well as the relationships of the projects to various DOE and Laboratory mission areas, grouped by relevant federal agency. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is charged with a large and complex mission. The DOE executes this mission to a large extent at its seventeen national laboratories, a group of institutions which were created and are supported by the Federal government to perform research and development (R&D) in areas of importance to the DOE and, where appropriate, to other Federal agencies. The national laboratories are performing R&D in support of DOE's goals in catalyzing the transformation of the nation's energy system, securing our leadership in clean energy, maintaining a vibrant scientific and engineering effort, and enhancing nuclear security through defense, nonproliferation, and environmental efforts. In recognition of the importance of the long-term health of these institutions, the U.S. Congress has authorized and encouraged them to devote a relatively small portion of their research effort to creative and innovative work that serves to maintain their vitality in science and technology (S&T) disciplines relevant to DOE and national security missions. Since 1991, this effort has formally been called Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD).
