Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history - eventually publishing his findings as 'A description of the Western Isles of Scotland'. This copy is in a newer quarter calf binding with blind tooled lines and gilt titles and date to spine, and marbled boards. It has some light scuffing and wear but is in very good condition. Description:
London and Edinburgh: J Mawman and David Brown, 1815 A fair copy of this important work in newer quarter leather binding. John Laing was ship's surgeon on The Resolution, which sailed from Whitby via Lerwick in the Shetland Isles to the North Sea whale fisheries at Spitzbergen in 1806/7. The book is based on his notes at the time and general observations of his journey, and includes fascinating descriptions of the wildlife he saw. This copy is classed as 'fair' because the print is quite heavy and, in some sections, has offset to the preceding text page. The text is still readable. The binding is in near fine condition with gilt titles and blind tooled lines to spine, and marbled boards. There is slight fading to the spine and light wear. New endpapers and blanks. Contents: title; dedication; advert; journal pp 1-159; appendix pp 161-173 finis. There is some light spotting to the title and the occasional spot elsewhere. Paper is lightly toned, and, as stated above, there are sections of… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Dan. Browne, and Lockyer Davis, 1753 A good copy of the 4th edition of Martin Martin's account of his visit to St Kilda in 1697 (first published in 1698). Martin Martin lived on Skye and was a gaelic speaker. He decided to visit and study the western isles of Scotland to record both the land and its culture and natural history. Although Martin's account was mocked by some, particularly because he was considered too believing of local tales, it was much read and reprinted. This copy is in a probably later 1800's half leather binding with marbled boards. The spine has blind stamped decoration and gilt compartments with leather title label to spine. It sound and clean with some rubbing at joints, edges and corners and a little scuffing. There is the armorial bookplate of Edward Herbert, Earl of Powis to the front pastedown, and some marking to the endpapers suggesting that a cover was stuck down over the book at some point. Description:
London: Alex Hogg, 1784 A very good copy in contemporary full calf binding. Originally issued in 60 parts, this work claims to be a comprehensive and accurate picture of Great Britain and Ireland. In reality the work mostly covers England with very small sections on everywhere else. There does not appear to be a definitive collation. There are directions to the binder but these number the contents 1-60, probably reflecting the 60 part issue and are very difficult to relate to the actual maps and scenes. This copy has: frontispiece; engraving to the preface; 2 folding maps of England and Wales; 29 single view plates; 52 double view plates; 4 triple view plates; 4 single page county maps; 12 double county map pages; 2 triple county map pages; 3 quad county map pages; and one page of portraits. The binding has been rebacked preserving the original spine and rebuilding the corners. It is in full calf with an intricate panelled diamond design to the boards, and with raised bands, title label and further… Read More

London : Thomas Bennet; John Nicholson; and Daniel Midwinter, 1705 A good copy of the 1st edition in recent full panelled calf bindings with 9 maps, 21 (of 22) plates, 2 frontispieces (one with loss) and 8 engravings in the text. John Harris (1633-1719) was an anglican priest and scientist, specialising in mathematics. He was admitted as an FRS in 1696. His written works were well-regarded and popular and Navigantium was published in 2 further enlarged editions. The 1st edition is relatively scarce and is sought after particularly for the first printings of the Moll maps. The bindings are in near fine clean condition with gilt-lined raised bands to the spine with gilt decoration in the compartments and title and volume labels. There is light scuffing. Internally new endpapers and blanks have been added. This set has been matched against the reference copy held by the Hathi Trust and matches it apart from a misplaced plate, a missing plate, a small misbound section in the appendix and a misplaced map… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
