About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1936. Hardcover. Very Good. The Last Puritan" is philosopher George Santayana's only novel and probably much to his surprise, it became a bestseller in 1935-36. Subtitled "A Memoir in the Form of a Novel," set in New England and in England around Oxford, it sets out the life of Oliver Alden. The book, which Santayana at first hesitated to publish because some of its content -- drug use, sexual orientation and atheism -- was, by early 20th century standards, detailed and explicit, gives "the emotions of my experience and not my thoughts or experiences themselves." Originally published in England in 1935 by Constable Publishing, London, this copy is the first printing, first U.S.edition issued by Scribner's Sons in 1936 with the "A" and the publisher's colophon on the copyright page. About 5 3/4 x 8 1/4 inches, 602 pages in green cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Sorry, no dustjacket. Boards show only light soiling and minimal wear at edges, corners and spine ends. No chipping, tearing or scratching. Binding tight, hinges intact. Text edges slightly soiled, o/w complete, clean and unmarked. Not ex-library, not remaindered. A very decent copy of an unlikely bestseller that's become a classic.
