THE LAST OF THE ARCTIC features 30 paintings and 16 black and white illustrations depicting the disappearing innocence of Arctic life. In October, 1975, Kurelek traveled to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic to research, paint and write the text for this book with the intent to portray the ages-old culture of the Inuit "the people". He found that there were few models on which to base his paintings. He found that the old ways of the people had been transformed by the white man's civilization. "Myths, moral tales, the hunt, the shaman, children, home building, and even starvation are hauntingly portrayed by the artist."Thirty color plates and 16 black and white drawings accompany Kurelek's warm, simple style of text.Signed by Kurelek and dated April 17, 1977 on title page.
