New York: Random House, 1957. FIRST EDITION. No. 438 OF 450 SIGNED COPIES. 205 x 130 mm. (8 x 5 1/8"). 5 p.l., 371 pp. FINE CONTEMPORARY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with filigree cornerpieces, gilt titling, turn-ins with decorative gilt roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Petersen A34c. ◆Just a breath of wear to the binding, but a near-mint copy, pristine internally. This is a desirable signed copy of the second volume in Faulkner's "Snopes" trilogy, a work written near the end of his storied career. As ANB observes, "Faulkner drew on the history of his region, its brief rise and its rapid fall; on its rich oral traditions, "the rag-tag and bob-ends of old tales and talkings" (as he called them in 'Absalom, Absalom!') that he had begun gathering from the air in his seemingly misspent boyhood and youth; on its customs, mores, folkways, and dialects; and even on its vegetation, geography, and wildlife. Faulkner's fiction conveys a sense of the past and its force.". Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Chez Zacharie Chatelain, 1728. Complete in 5 parts (various paginations) with frontispiece and 242 half-page engravings by Henri Cause, many based on those of François Chauveau. There also are attractiveengraved tailpieces following many of the fables. The 5th part of the Fables is not included in many editions; so this more complete edition is quite desirable. Recently and sympathetically rebound in full leather with the original spine and front & rear panels laid down. Internally clean with only an occasional hint of foxing; small chips out of margins of 5 leaves, not affecting text or images. In all, a very nice example of this scarce book, an early, delightfully illustrated French-language presentation of La Fontaine's fables.. Early Printing. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Henri Cause. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Book.

The books are clean and tight, with light dusting of the top edges and some foxing along the top edge of the cloth only on Book Five. Two volumes have a previous owner's name written very neatly on a front endpaper, and one has a bookplate on the front endpaper. Pages are lightly toned (especially Book One) and more so on the endpapers. Pages edges are toned. The dust jackets for Books 1-4 are clean and attractive with some light tanning, mostly along the spines. Sarah Campbell Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston, Houston TX, 1988. Book. Near Fine. Wrappers. Published as a 32 page newspaper format in conjunction with the exhibition at the Sarah Campbell Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston, May 31-July 31, 1988. As the paper is still bright white, it must be printed on archival paper made to look like newsprint, rather than on newsprint itself. A single fold through the center of the paper (as newspapers are traditionally folded) and some minor wear are all that mark this increasingly rare piece of Schnabel ephemera that dates to his first major return to Texas after his triumphs in the New York art world. 17 full page (sometimes double page) black and white illustrations, a checklist of the exhibition, an appreciative essay on the artist, and brief memories about him told by Houston art world people who recall Schnabel the student and ambitious Houston artist. A scarce piece of artist's ephemera..
