Good condition (original decorated printed wrappers beginning to separate, but still holding, minor chipping, not affecting contents).

Under "Trade Notes," a paragraph for "Books, Binding &c." states, "The Booksellers of Richmond are all gentlemen of superior intelligence, and of long experience, possessing a critical knowledge of books, and a thorough familiarity with the needs of the scholar, professional man, and the general public."

Small quarto (11 x 8 1/4 inches) Published in the Interest of the Firemen's Relief Fund, December 1900. 116 pages of half tone black and white photos of early Los Angeles, portraits, and advertisements for Los Angeles businesses of the period.

Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

While many authors and political leaders, such as WEB du Bois, were highly critical of Washington's work, he still emphasized the importance of education among the black population, especially in the South, which was a realistic tactic to easing racial tensions. This book was also gives the first mention of extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.

Daniel Defoe was an English author who gained enduring fame for his novel, Robinson Crusoe. Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest practitioners of the novel and helped popularize the genre in Britain. In some texts he is even referred to as one of the founders, if not the founder, of the English novel.

While Robinson Crusoe is his best and most iconic work, he wrote numerous other works including another adventure voyage book called "A New Voyage Round the World". (5) 59 + (6) pages printed in Japanese and English on hand made Japanese vellum, with 26 individual fabric samples (25 are tipped in, the 26th sample is the cover material for the hardcover binding), plus a wood block print illustrating a woman in Japanese wardrobe working at a hand loom. Number 180 of a limited edition of 200. Housed in an ink blue stiff folder with bone ties. At the bottom of each page is a description of the sample, its pattern, its weave, and its dye; in addition to a small woodblock illustration of the plant from which the fabric is derived. Very good condition.
