German Lutherans immigrated to Milwaukee in the early 1800's maintaining their language and keeping their faith from becoming Americanized. Not until 1910 did Milwaukee become the home to six English-language Lutheran churches. Sherman Park English Evangelical Lutheran Church was established in 1923 making this cook book a presumed first edition and a historically and culturally important text. "…it is evident that the tension between maintaining religious identity and Americanization continues to shape the idea and presence of Lutheranism in Milwaukee."
