The spines & extremities are darkened & the heads & tails of the spines are chipped with a small piece out of the Vol. 1 spine near the head. There are a few small stains & some spotting to the wraps with light creasing to the corners. The endpapers are darkened. 271 & [1] pages; and 280 pages. 11 plates [maps], 10 of them folding, in blue, black & white and black-and-white textual illustrations. There is spotting to the top edges & to the fore-edge of Vol. 1. A few page corners are lightly creased & there is occasional minor foxing. A good tight set.

Hattendorf of the U.S. Naval War College refers to Rene Daveluy in his 2000 Caird Lecture on the Anglo-French Naval Wars in twentieth century naval thought: "As other countries, France had also established a college for higher professional studies on naval warfare. First established in 1896, it had a variety of changes in name, but for forty years was known as the Ecole de Guerre Navale. Like several of its sister colleges in other countries, the study of history took pride of place as one of the principal subjects of study. Among its most famous instructors were Captain Gabriel Darrieus and Rear-Admiral Rene Daveluy. While they represented the leaders who created a renaissance of naval thinking in France in the pre-World One period, their use of the Anglo-French wars was highly influenced by Mahan's thinking."
