About This Item
Chatto and Windus, London - first UK edition 1963 Hardcover, 8¾" x 5½", with dust jacket Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode, pocket etc. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket Light-blue cloth-bound boards with gold type to spine, bibliography, notes and references, and index. This is the first full-length study of L P Hartley's work (made during his lifetime, 1895 - 1972, and with his assistance, and unpublished materials). Hartley's trilogy, Eustace and Hilda, and subsequence fiction has recurrent themes of explosive inter-class sexual liaisons, and Peter Bien's treatment of this conflict between moral and aesthetic values is intelligent, exact and stimulating.
