With a black and white frontispiece in Volume I, and letter illustrations throughout. Marguerite de Navarre (French: Marguerite d'Angoulme, Marguerite d'Alenon; 11 April 1492 21 December 1549), also known as Marguerite of Angoulme and Margaret of Navarre, was the princess of France, Queen of Navarre, and Duchess of Alenon and Berry. She was married to Henry II of Navarre. Her brother became King of France, as Francis I and the two siblings were responsible for the celebrated intellectual and cultural court and salons of their day in France. As an author and a patron of humanists and reformers, she was an outstanding figure of the French Renaissance. Samuel Putnam called her The First Modern Woman. Condition: In paper bindings with illustration detail to front paper wrap. Externally, generally sound, with some closed tears and a little loss. Some age toning, a few marks and foxing to Volume I. Paper wrap on Volume II is detached from text block. Internally, generally firmly bound but binding tender in places. Pages are generally bright and clean with a little age toning and some spotting.
