About This Item
First edition of this collection of Tolkatchev's illustrated reportage on Auschwitz and its liberation. One of the earliest illustrated books about the Holocaust.
Zinowij Tolkaczew (Zinovii Tolkatchev; 1903-1977) was a Soviet-Jewish graphic artist and painter. As a volunteer in the Red Army he participated in the liberation of the concentration camps Majdanek and Auschwitz. He drew and wrote down what he saw and heard from the liberated prisoners, and these experiences resulted in the creation of the series of artworks that were published in printed form as this booklet and others in portfolios.
