Description:
Bethesda: National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, 1974. Paperback. 203p., has a line map plus substantial appended materials (nearly a hundred additional pages in English and German including numerous b&w photographs and more line maps), text reproduced from a keyboard-set ms, softbound in 11x8.5 inch blue printed wraps bound with spine and cover titling (not just stapled like most of Gajdusek's publications). Wraps are slightly rolled and are stained with cup rings and spots; clean within, sound and unmarked, a good copy. Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures. Lots on local children, Gajdusek is a warmth magnet. Lots on kuru, a very nasty condition not unlike polio which (it has been concluded) derives from ritual consumption of dead people's brains.
Kuru Epidemiological Patrol from the New Guinea Highlands to Papua. August 21, 1957 to November 10, 1957 by Gajdusek, D. Carleton, visiting scientist - 1974

Bethesda: National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, 1974. Spiral_bound. 203p., first issue of the main text. (FYI, no illustrations or maps and none of the "substantial appended materials" of a later printing that we have seen.) Text reproduced from a keyboard-set ms, softbound in spiralbound 11x8.5 inch blue printed wraps. Covers mildly smudged with dust and offset, the black plastic spine is damaged (partially crushed by superincumbent weight) but doesn't inhibit handling, a good (good-only) copy that is inscribed and signed by Dr Gajdusek to his smart travel agent. His handwriting is curiously juvenile. Study of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns in Primitive Cultures. Lots on local children, Gajdusek is a warmth magnet. Lots on kuru, a very nasty condition not unlike polio which (it has been concluded) derives from ritual consumption of dead people's brains.
