London, Harrap, 1919.. SECOND EDITION 1919 (first published in 1917), large 8vo, 210 x 160 mm, 8¼ x 6½ inches, green cloth, extra colour plate on upper cover, gilt lettered spine, lettered on gilt panels on upper cover, 284 pages. Title page in red and black, pretty coloured frontispiece and 7 coloured plates. A delightful fairy story with goblins and possibly the first appearance of Mr Papingay who features in the title of 4 of the author's later books. A touch of rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners, gilt panels slightly dull on upper cover, small lightly faded area at tail of spine due to removal of previous owner's paper label, very faint foxing to endpapers, a few fox spots and margins faintly browned on title page, a few margin fox spots to first few pages and last few, pages next to plates faintly browned, very small closed tear to 1 lower margin, neatly repaired, minute closed tear to fore-edge of 4 leaves, otherwise a very good plus copy of uncommon Margaret Tarrant title. Laid in is a typed letter dated 8 August 1946 to the author's husband Sidney H. Webb from the Medici Society who had published many of Mrs St John Webb's earlier titles, informing him that they don't think they could make a success of reprinting this title and therefore returning to him the copy he had sent them. The letter is signed J. Gurney, Managing Director and is quite foxed. Sidney Webb has written his address in pencil on the front endpaper requesting that the book is to be returned to him if not required. Sidney H. Webb wrote a few minor novels.
