About This Item
Crawfordsville, IN: Montgomery County Historical Society, Inc, 1997. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. 229pp. Numerous illustrations (2 color). Near fine. First edition, tight and handsome, of this memoir by a beloved Indiana physician and World War Two veteran (1910-2000). Boldly inscribed and signed by him in black ballpoint on half-title page: "For Mary Manson -- a very good / friend from Sycamore Hills! / Thanks, Mary! / James Marion Kirtley, M.D." Manson (1901-2004) signs the front pastedown in black ballpoint. Her husband (George Durham Manson, 1900-64) was grandson of Crawfordsville famed Union general, Mahlon Dickerson Manson (1820-95) -- son of the second of the general's six children, namesake Mahlon (1853-1931). On pages 3, 4 and 5 she pencils comments about the Crawfordsville electric train noted by Kirtley ("My father was the attorney for this line," "Mother & I made frequent shopping trips on the limited," "We rode this from our house 1920 W. Main St."). A charming copy with interesting local connections.
