Some of King Solomon's Mines is true and some is only built upon the truth and I must leave you to guess which is which. As it is you ought to be very thankful that you are able to believe so throughly in anything. Perhaps when you get older you will realise how great is the value of one's illusions- Believe me very truly yours H. Rider Haggard". 8vo, approximately 190 x 125 mm, 7½ x 5 inches, folding coloured map as frontispiece, and a line map in the text, 320 pages plus 16 page catalogue, original publisher's pictorial cloth, gilt title to spine, black lettering and decoration to spine and covers, pale yellow endpapers. Binding slightly dusty and spine slightly darkened, slight shelf wear to corners and head and tail of spine, both top corners slightly stained with slight pale bleed through to following endpaper, folding map has 2 closed marginal tears (2" and ½") both repaired, not affecting image, lower inner margin of folding map trimmed, not affecting image, slight pale foxing to folding map and title page, inner paper hinges cracked, some signs of handling in the margins, neat old ink name to top of first free endpaper, otherwise a very good copy. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
