"He wrote the history of the catastrophe in a few pages but those pages are worthy of Sallust. ...He also produced a picture of the revolution in Poland... being informed by sure correspondents, and having collected excellent materials..." Re-bound in cloth, retains the original paper front cover which is very soiled and marked, it also has a small hole and s paper repair to the uper inner corner. The rear cover is not present. Browning and spotting throughout, sometimes heavily. Pages from 220 onwards are stained. The final blank page is very browned and stained..

Aside from a couple of small water marks to the frontis and title pages this is a bright copy in original publishers red cloth with elaborate blind stanped decoration to both boards and spine. Gilt lettering to the centre of the front board and the spine. Yellow coated endpapers. A hint of fading to the spine and mild mottling to the front board but overall a lovely copy.

French language 1st Edition (precedes the English language translation of 1929). 282pp + 8 photographic plates (containing 9 illustrations) + 4 maps - all collated and present. Good+ condition - light foxing, slant to the text block and minor edge wear / corner curl. No inscriptions. Better than this description sounds. Having entered the royal navy when ten years old, he served, chiefly in West and East Indian waters, until the peace of 1814. He then made a tour on foot through France, Spain, and Portugal.
