To start with, she worked as an illustrator and drew Valentine and Christmas cards, as well as black and white pictures for various books. Her great breakthrough came in 1877 when she met Edmund Evans and showed him the collection of drawings and poems that she had assembled. These were published by Evans as 'Under the Window', which was a runaway success and was followed by the many childrens books for which she is best known. Among these are 'Mother Goose', 'The Language of Flowers', 'Marigold Garden', 'A Apple Pie' and 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', to name but a few. This biography, written by her friends M.H.
