London: Frederick Warne and Co. Ltd, , 1921. First edition, first impression. Greenaway was one of the great illustrators of the Victorian era, in influence and popularity the most significant female illustrator of that period. Her style is immediately recognizable, and spawned many imitators. "In her idyllic and profoundly nostalgic depictions of vaguely eighteenth-century and slightly stilted children, Greenaway combined strong outlines and a keen ability to arrange and pattern space with the use of a palette of soft, silvery pastel colours" (ODNB). Quarto (307 x 246 mm). 1970s green calf gilt, titles in gilt to spine, foliate motifs and ruling in gilt to spine and boards, turn-ins richly gilt, green endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green silk bookmark. Mounted photographic portrait frontispiece, and 20 mounted colour illustrations, all with captioned tissue-guard. Press cutting from 1972 with book catalogue for Baltman & Co, listing the present work, loosely inserted. Slight wear to extremities, a single small wormhole to inner bottom margins through the first 11 leaves; else a clean and very good copy.
