Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1854., 1854. First edition. First edition. 12mo. Original blind-stamped cloth with spine title and floral decoration in gold gilt, viii, 256 pp., plus 4 pages of advertisements, preface, fold-out map. Edward E. Hale was a clergyman and served for many years. Among his numerous books he is most remembered for THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, published anonymously in the "Atlantic" magazine in 1863. He discusses the discoverers of the regions, Indian tribes, rivers and valleys, military, trading and missionary posts, projected cities in Nebraska and Kansas, routes of travel, political history, and the Emigrant… Read More
