Boston: Phillips, Sampson and Company, 1854. 256 pages, plus folding map and four pages ads. Blind and gilt stamped red cloth covers. Fairly light wear at spine ends and corners. Lower outside corner shows moisture stains and wrinkles, though not affecting contents. There is some residue on the front paste down where a previous owner's book plate was removed. A little foxing is seen on the first and last few leaves, including mild foxing on the folding map. Map is otherwise in very good condition. Volume remains tight and contents are otherwise clean and intact.. First Edition. Cloth. Good/No Jacket.

Hale was a clergyman and served for many years. Among his numerous books he is most remembered for THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, published anonymously in the "Atlantic" magazine in 1863. He advises that the use of the "z" in the word "Kanzas" is preferred by him as the "z" sound is more accurate in pronouncing the state's name and the spelling with the "s" replacing the "z" is too "fashionable."
