This 1854 book is often considered the best book on the emigration following the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Includes an historical look at Kansas, as well as an account of the Indian tribes. Intriguing information on emigrant aid companies, emigration from the West (including of Chinese from California), the suitability of the territory for emigrants and a significant discussion of the fugitive slave question, the Missouri Compromise, women's rights, suffrage, and the railroad. The "Map of Kanzas & Nebraska from the Original Surveys" foldout in front of the book is in tact, complete, original, and in very good condition. See full table of contents in photographs.

Condition: This original hardcover from 1854 is in superlative condition...the best we've seen for sale! It has been fully, carefully, professionally restored by re-backing, retaining original pale yellow end pages, boards, and spine piece. As shown, gilt on the spine is bright. Original map in frontispiece is in very good condition, as photographed. Little to no foxing. Title page has a light crimp on the top right corner (see in photo, if you can find it!) Otherwise, we found no writing, stamps, crimps, notes, or inscriptions within. Add the secure binding and the beautiful finish, and you have a true heirloom which will retain its beauty for its next 150+ years!
