London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1902. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Rudyard Kipling. 1st Printing 1 Copyright date is 1902, first edition, first printing. This first edition of Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling is decoratively bound in red cloth with animal depictions. Just So Stories for Little Children" is a 1902 collection of original stories by the British author Rudyard Kipling. Considered a classic of children's literature, the book is among Kipling's best known works. Kipling began working on the book by telling the first three chapters as bedtime stories to his daughter Josephine. These had to be told "just so" (exactly in the words she was used to) or she would complain. Some typical indications of shelfwear and rubbing to the boards and spine are evident. The front hinge is partially cracked and the top portion of the title page has been excised. A hand-written inscription appears on the Contents page. Age toning and minor chipping to edges appear in the text block, yet the text remains clear and crisp.

Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Howes F372; Wagner-Camp 115:2; Graff 1436. House Doc. No. 166. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will…

Paris: Vaugirard, 1907. A lovely copy of this first edition, with lengthy gift inscription and unrecorded poem. Attractive red half leather binding with marbled boards. Attractive gilt decoration to the spine. There is cracking / splitting to the top edge of the front board, and it is in danger of becoming detached. Marbled endpapers and ex libris of Yves Refoule. Legrand has inscribed a 12 line poem and gift inscription to his friend Refoule. In addition, there are a few handwritten annotations and corrections to the text of the poems. It would appear that these were corrections made by Legrand. 30 pages. Music hall administrator, critic and historian, a specialist in circus and music-hall performances between the wars, Legrand collaborated closely with Jean-Marcel Chabrier and they produced many works as Andre Legrand Chabrier. Bel exemplaire de cette première édition, avec une longue inscription de cadeau et un poème non enregistré. Jolie reliure demi-cuir rouge à plats marbrés. Jolie…

PAGE DISCOLOURATION DUE TO AGE.NO MARKS BUT PRIOR OWNERS NAME ON INSIDE COVERSome reviewers were outraged by Ann Vickers when it first appeared in 1933. "Persons unused to horrid and filthy things had better stay at a safe distance from this book," wrote one. Lewis's Ann Vickers is a complex character: a strong-minded prison superintendent dedicated to enlightened social reform, she also seeks to fulfill herself as a sexual being. Ann Vickers is in all respects her own person, standing up to the confining rules of her society.
