In 1900 Verney joined the Rifle Brigade and was sent to South Africa where the Boer War was in progress; writing regularly to his parents describing every detail of dailylife. Verney became ADC to Lord Chelmsford in India. During World War I, Verney served in France, where he had the good fortune to be wounded.
