London: Royal Geographical Society, 1931. Narrative is 39 pages, plus photographic plates and a large fold-out colour map measuring 16 x 23 inches (40 x 58cm). In original condition, published in two separate consecutive monthly issues of the Geographical Journal. Seldom found in such very good condition, two complete issues with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. Narrative of Bagnold's first expedition retracing the route undertaken by Rohlfs fifty years earlier, attempting to penetrate the 'Libyan Sand Sea' by motor car and his second journey incorporating the desert west and south-west of Ain Dalla, Ammonite Hill and Uweinat. Bagnold was keen to implement a convention that could depict and distinguish between land submerged by sand, longitudinal dune ranges, chains of 'barchan' dunes and fields of short crested chaotic dunes, partly because accurate representation of the area would ease transport difficulties as the area gradually developed and further, he posited, identification of a great sand system would suggest useful ideas on meteorology and the area's history of climate. Illustrated with numerous photographic plates, and including appendices on survey methods and results, baromteric heights and meteorology, the Kufara-Egypt caravan route and botanical notes. . First Edition.
