About This Item

London: C Rivington, 1735 A fair copy of the 1st edition in contemporary binding. Classed as 'fair' because it lacks the map. An important work because of the account of central America, one of the few recorded by an outsider. Cockburn, Thomas Rounce, Richard Banister, John Holland, Thomas Robinson, and John Ballman, found themselves 'naked and wounded', stranded on the shore at Porto-Cavalo after being taken by Spanish 'Guarda-Costa'. They made their way inland and trailled around 2,400 miles across Central America to Panama. The account was a best-seller, although initially regarded as a fake because of the level of danger and privation it portrayed. The panelled calf binding has been repaired to reinforce the corners and edges, and provide a new spine with raised bands and title label. It is in very good condition. Internally the endpapers have been repaired - there is some loss to the top corner of the fep. Contents: title page (faint signature to top and staining to verso); preface iii-viii; text pp 1-259 (occasional staining eg bottom margin p57/8; mispagination - 106-170-108; small edge tear bottom margin p 159); 'A short account of what befel Mr Rounce pp 260-264; title page for Travells of Nicholas Withington; text pp 267-341; Letters pp 342-349; Finis; publisher's list 3pp. With decorative head and tailpieces. Contents generally clean, in good condition overall.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
