When all the animals disappear one day, the farmer and his wife can no longer afford to feed him and Johnny is let go to find his own way in the world. He's given a Journey Cake (a round of cornbread) for his travels but it falls out of his bag and rolls down the hill. As it rolls and Johnny chases it, pigs, cows, sheep, and chickens follow after and they all end up back at the farm. Written by Ruth Sawyer; illustrated by Robert McCloskey. McCloskey recieved a Caldecott Honor for his illustrations. Weekly Reader Children's Book Club edition. 45 pages; color illustrations throughout; 8 x 10.5 inches.
