The atlas has 88 reproductions of original charts and views drawn by Cook and his officers on the three voyages. Also includes the journals of the surgeons William Anderson and David Samwell, both printed for the first time, as well as those of Captains Clerke and King for the duration of the voyage after Cook's death.

Large (14.5" x 10.25") navy blue folder containing LVIII (58) loose separate charts, many of them folding. Gilt impression of Captain James Cook on front and bright gilt lettering to spine. String-tied. In gray slip-over, recently-mended paper dust wrapper, lettered in navy. Dustwrapper missing one, 2" x 3" chip bottom rear, and a smaller 1/2" x 3/4" from top of spine). "The TITLE of each chart is transcribed from the original;if the original has none, a title is supplied in square brackets. The authorship is stated where it is known or inferred with some probability. Modern place-names are given, together with the dates (taken from Cook's Journals) at which the ship(s) navigated or lay at anchor in the area represented on the chart. The orientation is noted only if North is not at the top of the chart. The medium of the charts is pen-and-ink, with occasional use of wash or water-colour. The scale and dimensions (height by width) given are those of the originals; the scale is normally stated in nautical miles (m), leagues (l), or degrees (d) to inches, e.g. m = 2 in, d = 4 3/4 in..."
