Preface by William Penn. Foxing throughout, joints broken with boards a bit loose but still attached, leather rubbed and worn with some chipping on edges and spine ends, good to very good. The chronicle of the often persecuted seventeenth century Quaker as told by Fox and others such as William Penn and Oliver Cromwell.

Full leather over boards, 8vo (8-5/8 inches tall), pp. [i]-liv, [55]-672, index. Volume with wear to covers, faint water stain to bottom corner of first few leaves, occasional soil and foxing within, p.o. name ffep and small glue spots with paper hymn remnant or similar, to front and rear pastedowns. George Fox was a founder of the Religious Society of Friends, more commonly known today as the Quakers.

Both book and DJ are in very good condition. DJ is not clipped. Slight tear to DJ is 2 places. and some wear to top of spine of DJ. Please see photos.

The outer binding of this leather-bound book shows many signs of wear over the last 340 years, but the hinges are firm and intact. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. Published by the long-time printing firm, Thomas Newcomb for another London printer, Joseph Hindmarsh, at the "Black Bull in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange." Seneca was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman and dramatist.

A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Mottled calf with five raised bands on spine, gilt lettering and tooling in spine compartments. [20], 1-336pp. Text in French and Latin. An abbreviated compilation of information tidbits and lists of animals, earth science, plants, crimes, and all kinds of information describing the natural and human world. The author was a French Jesuit scholar (1618-1673). Measures 6.25 x 3.75 inches. .

This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
