J & J Harper. NY., 1832 Smallish book about 4 by 6 inches with some 337 pages plus two pages of publisher ads at the rear. Bound in thin tan cloth over boards. Covers with printed title and other information. Book No. XXXVI in the publisher Family Library series. Illustrated with three in-text images and one tissue guarded plate. An actual exciting account of early African exploration. Reading of the rigors of the trip made me wonder why anyone would attempt the travels. A very worn and used copy with primitive re-backing, heavy wear, internal moderate foxing, etc. Perfectly readable throughout. FAIR. Hardcover. Fair.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1839. John Lander (1806-1839) and his brother Richard (1804-1834) were the first Europeans to follow the course of the Niger to its terminus in the Atlantic. First published in 1832; this is a Very Good (Minus) set of an early printing from seven years later. Historical significance and not common. Two small volumes of Harper's "Stereotype Edition," numbers 35 and 36 of "The Family Library." Pebbled brown cloth bindings with gilt titling on the spines. Clean texts, bright and clear, with occasional spotting. Illustrations throughout. Volume One is xiii, map, then continues from page 18 to 384; the frontis is a fold-out map. Volume Two is vii, beginswith page nine to page 337. An Appendix lists their stores and medicines for the trip. First edition. 3 volumes, small 8vo., engraved portrait frontispiece, 6 engraved plates, 2 maps (1 folding), light spotting to plates, contemporary half calf, marbled boards, a fine set. one of the great African narratives completing the navigaton of the river niger.Richard Lander accompanied Hugh Clapperton as his manservant on his second expedition to explore the Niger in 1825. The expedition disembarked on the Nigerian coast determined to strike inland to Sokoto, then descend the Niger to the Atlantic. Most of the party died of malaria en route and it was only Clapperton and Lander who made it to Sokoto. The local ruler, Mohammed Bello, who had tried to trick Clapperton with a false map on his first expedition with Denham, agreed to allow them to return to the sea by way of the Niger. With success all but guaranteed, Clapperton fell victim to malaria and dysentery and Lander was left to make his way bak alone through territory controlled by hostile tribes.Lander… Read More
