Albany: E. Croswell, 1821. First edition. Hardcover. Fair. Legislative record of the New York Assembly in the period of the construction of the Erie Canal and the state's official outlawing of slavery. The Clerk's Office copy, with "Clerks Office" in period ink written at the top of the title page.
Covers the period the Legislature met, from November 7, 1820, to April 3, 1821, during the fourth year of DeWitt Clinton's governorship.
At the time, New York's politicians were split in two camps: the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. In addition, the Democratic-Republican Party was split into two factions: the Clintonians and the Bucktails (supported Martin Van Buren and the Tammany Hall machine).
Defective, lacks preliminaries preceding title page; final leaves of Index lacking (includes up to p xxviii; following page mostly torn away).
Folio volume, 1141 pp, Appendix, xxviii Index. Boards lacking, spine perished. As is.
