Because Eichendorff is probably more closely connected with the Romantic movement in the minds of the German people than any other writer, the half-educated in Germany have all too readily pinned on him the labels "popular" and "trivial". For years now sensitive critics have attempted to educate reading Germans to the depth and breadth of the real Eichendorff. The anniversary of Eichendorff's death in 1957 gave an especially good opportunity and a new vigor to the deep probing into the Silesian's art and thinking. There is much in Eichendorff's work which is begging for investigation and explanation. In this book Paul Stocklein has collected Eichendorff studies by fourteen of Germany's scholars, some of whom are very well-known: Richard Alewyn, Richard Benz, Wilhelm Emrich, Friedrich Heer, Erich Hock, Curt Hohoff, Hermann Kunisch, Gerhard Mobus, Robert Muhlher, Horst Rudiger, Reinhold Schneider, Oskar Seidlin, Paul Stocklein himself, and Franz Uhlendorff. Wolfgang Kron's bibliography brings the Eichendorff literature up to date from the time of the last all-inclusive listing by Karl von Eichendorff in 1926.
