Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1943. Newbery Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine Condition/Good. Illustrator: Ward, Lynd. Near Fine HB in G+ DJ, protected by Brodart mylar cover. The blurb on the first DJ flap identifies this as the "Newbery Edition" and notes that artist Lynd Ward "has sharpened the drama of the story by adding twelve full-page illustrations." There is also a notice of the award on the half-title page. So, although the copyright page says 1943, this was apparently a special 1944 edition issued after the book received the award. 4 p. l., 256 p.: illus, col. front.; col. map on endpapers, 21 cm. Gray cloth over boards with blue/black illustration on front cover and title on spine. Size: Octavo (8vo; up to 9 3/4" / 20-25 cm tall). 256 pages. Text block is tight, bright and unmarked. Binding is tight; corners shap with minimal shelf wear. DJ shows wear around the edges, with some loss at the corners, a large chip at the top of the spine affecting the "Fo" of the author's name and a 2 1/2" by 1/4" strip missing at the bottom of the front panel affecting the words "Pulitzer Prize"; now protected in an archival cover. Synopsis

Johnny Tremain, a 1943 children's novel by Esther Forbes, retells in narrative form the final years in Boston prior to the outbreak of the American Revolution. The novel's themes include the apprenticeship system, the conflicts in Boston between the Sons of Liberty and Loyalists as the war approaches, and the reasons why each character in the novel chooses one side or the other.
