New York, 1806. Very good condition. Record of payments "received New York April 14, 1806" including one for one hundred dollars from John Lefferts- John Lee, and another for "John B. Gay's note for seven hundred dollars for collection". Signed in full John Van Nostrand, with an addendum below noting "one more drawn by Jesse J. Clapp for one hundred seventeen pounds with lawfull interest also for collection and to be accounted for by me", and signed in full a second time. These are likely records for the New York Merchants' Exchange Bank. The Van Nostrand family was an influential Brooklyn family, involved in New York politics and banking. James Van Nostrand, likely the brother of John Van Nostrand, was the president of the Merchants' Exchange Bank in New York City; John was a Director at the bank. The Lefferts family was one of the wealthiest and connected families in Brooklyn. Different branches of the family owned the land that would become Bedford Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Prospect Lefferts Gardens. The verso with period notes in a different period hand pertaining to the Christian holy days during Easter season. 8 x 3 3/4", period folds flattened.
