John Constable's Clouds by Badt, Kurt - 1950

"In the work of John Constable the cloud studies form a compact and separate group; the most important of them were painted in 1821 and 1822. Dr Kurt Badt shows that these studies were based on a little-remembered essay by Luke Howard, 'On the Modification of Clouds', published in 1820, which for the first time clearly defined the structure and assembling of clouds and the laws governing their movements. With the help of this new knowledge Constable was able to bring order to his untrained vision, and we see this strengthened imagination in his later works". Pp.x/102, 8 black & white plates, damp-staining to both front and rear endpapers but internally unaffected, some creasing to corners. Red cloth has bubbling from old damp. Dustwrapper worn with tears and losses and old tape repair stains. Scarce. G/Poor.

Hardcover with price clipped dust jacket, ix + 102 pages, plus black-and-white illustrations; gently used copy with only very light shelf wear to cover edges, light bumps to cover corners and spine ends, but tight in binding, all text pages very clean and unmarked, flawed primarily by faded old discolouration to the front cover and spine ends caused possibly by intense sun fading due to the fragmentary DJ, but more probably by exposure to moisture although no staining is visible inside. ; the remains of the DJ consist of roughly three quarters of the spine and front panel and all of the front flap, the remains now in a professional archival quality mylar protector. Tightly bound with mild thumb-marking throughout. Moderate foxing to text block edges. Boards have light edge wear with minor corner bumping. Mild crushing to spine, with occasional markings overall. Books has a backward lean. Boards are mildly warped. Unclipped jacket has moderate edgewear with chips, tears, and creasing. Moderate foxing. Mild sunning to spine. Mild rubbing and marking all over. Minor stains to front panel.
