Charles Kikuchi was born in Vallejo and was incarcerated during World War II. He was resettled in Chicago and then worked as a social worker in Veterans' Administration Hospitals where he counseled Black veterans. The book examines his life and diaries "as a lens through which to observe the possibilities, failures, and key conversations in a dynamic multiracial America.
