Paris: Acanthe Gallery , 1950. This is a very good set of two packs of playing cards and a carrying case for them + a prospectus. There is a folded sheet of heavy green card stock:a "Prospectus" in very good condition with just a slight crease to front and back not affecting the two original cards tipped-onto the front of the Prospectus which show an example of the face card and its obverse (the patterned side of the card). Inside there is one double-page tipped-in text in French discussing Surrealism, games of chance and the work of Leonor Fini. Original clamshell box with 2 compartments for 2 decks of cards and slipcase cover. Printed paper title label: Leonor Fini - Jeux de Cartes. Each one of the face cards of each suit: Jack, Queen, King and a Joker have fanciful designs of men and women on them, the colors still very bold and bright. All designs typical of Fini's work of this period. The cards have all gilt edges. One pack has a purple "sponge" patterned back, and the other has the same type pattern in green. Light soiling to spine of box and to slip case. Small stain to corner of slip case, splits to head and tail. Overall in very good condition, with all cards very clean, no marks or creases. Both decks are complete. Bibliographical reference: Uwe-Volker Segreth, Spielkarten, Jugendstil und Art Deco. Edition Christian Brandstetter, 1994. pg 152-53 for reproductions of face cards, and also an important note concerning the number of cards per deck issued in this edition. It states 52 cards + 1 Joker per deck. Box is 5.5" high X 3.5" wide X 1" thick. Prospectus is 4to size, 11" high X 8" wide. A beautiful set. . Very Good.

Octavo (9" x 5 1/2") bound in quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine and marbled edges. (Whyld and Ravillious: 1822:6). First edition. John Cochrane (1798-1878), Scottish Master, did not achieve note as player who had big practical successes. Spending most of his life in India (1824-69), his clashes against top players occurred during 1841-42, while on vacation in London. Cochrane played on equal terms against George Walker (1803-1879), William Davies Evans (1790-1872), and others. He even managed to win a match (6-4) against the Frenchman Pierre Charles Fournier de Saint- Amant (1800-1872), though in a series of games against Howard Staunton (1810-1874) he was defeated convincingly. All his preserved games show a player totally committed to tactics, a player who liked to attack and sacrifice, sometimes beyond reasonable risk. 343 pages. Duodecimo (5 ½" x 3 ¼"). Bound in vellum with black lettering to spine. Originally written in 1619 in Italian. [Biblioteca van Der Niemeijeriana: 402]Gioachino Greco, also known as Il Calabrese, was born around 1600 in Celico, which near Cosenza in Calabria. Calabria had already produced such players as Leonardo di Bono and Michele di Mauro. From his writing it's apparent the he wasn't educated and likely came from a lower class family. Already in 1619, Greco started keeping a notebook of tactics and particularly clever games and he took up the custom of giving copies of his manuscripts to his wealthy patrons. In Rome Monsignor Corsino della casa Minutoli Tegrini, Cardinal Savelli and Monsignor Francisco Buoncompagni all received copies (of which there are extant copies, dated 1620 in the Corsiniana library in Rome, under the title, Trattato del nobilissimo gioco de scacchi). Despite his popularity in Rome, in 1621 Greco took off to test himself against the rest of Europe leaving this… Read More

In the winter of 1950 Lodewijk Prins, backed by a committee presided over by Hendrik Jan Van Steenis, organized an international chess tournament that was held at the stock exchange in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Invitations went out to all the strongest chess masters of the day, whether they reside in Europe, the Soviet Union, or the Americas.
The Soviet Chess Federation declined the invitations sent to their masters (they would refrain from entering international competitions until late 1952), as did Lazslo Szabo. Nevertheless, the eventual line-up was still one of the finest selections to be found of the best, active Western chess masters of the day. The field was notable also for the healthy mix of both early century chess mastery and post-war talent emerging for the next… Read More
