Description:
Auburn, CA: Blue Oak Press, (1975). First edition, limited issue. Number 81 of an unstated number of copies SIGNED BY HOTCHKISS on title page. Analysis of Robinson Jeffers' poetry by Hotchkiss, a poet, novelist and the founder of Blue Oak Press. Includes prefatory note by Donnan Jeffers, foreword by A. R. Kitzhaber, and introductory "Letter from William Everson." Chronology, notes, and a bibliography of sorts follow text. 8vo gilt-stamped brown imitation leather boards; illustrated with a frontispiece drawing of Jeffers and black-and-white photographs of various scenes throughout (uncredited); 254 pp. Fine in crisp, fine dust jacket. Publisher's prospectus laid in stating "the first edition will be limited to a thousand copies, with each copy being signed by the author," which seems unlikely given the dearth of copies online or in libraries (OCLC records under 100). Unaccountably scarce.

Laguna Beach, Ca: Laguna Verde Imprenta, 1977. First edition of the first separate appearance of Ritchie's tribute to Jeffers written shortly after his death. A very limited issue with stated limitation of only "about 50 copies." Printed by Ritchie himself on an Albion hand press and bound in 6 x 9.5" marbled paperwraps (fashioned as a dust jacket over plain wraps with flaps pasted down) with woodcut engraving on cover and title page by Leo Wyatt; 33 pp. Prints Jeffers' poem, "Stars," followed by Ritchie's recollections about Jeffers, his circle of friends, and supporters. Originally written for inclusion in ROBINSON JEFFERS: AVE VALE (Grabhorn, 1962) but deemed too long by the books organizer, Theodore Lilienthal (Ritchie contributed another shorter piece). It was instead published in Occidental College's alumni and faculty magazine, Impromptu, in 1963 and, according to Ritchie (p.29), was expanded slightly for this publication. This copy with "Ward Ritchie and Robinson Jeffers: On the Occasion of a Lecture by Ward Ritchie at California State University, Long Beach, April 23, 1979" laid in. Single leaf folded to make 4 pages including covers. Issued as a program and/or flyer for the lecture, it prints Ritchie's checklist of Jeffers' works on inside pages and an overview of the university's Jeffers' collection on the back. Both items are in fine condition.
