Laguna Beach, Ca: Laguna Verde Press, 1993. First edition. One of 40 copies. (Colophon's printed statement says "fifty" but publisher has lined that out and written in "40 survived.") Association copy INSCRIBED "For Allen Mears/ and his outstanding/ Jeffers collection./ Ward Ritchie" The book contains two articles, bound so they are inverted and each therefore begins the book. This type of book is called dos-a-dos or back-to-back. "Jeffers," by Ritchie, gives the history leading up to the publication of Jeffers' prose piece "Mirrors," and contains observations of those who knew him in Occidental and USC. As stated in the colophon, "A hodge-podge of paper remnants" were used and the book was bound in black cloth by Kater-Crafts. "Jeffers" cover and interior illustrations are by David Dicker. (The Book Club of California's Winter 1993 quarterly news-letter has Ritchie's article on Laguna Verde Press, which states that David Dicker is one of Ritchie's pseudonyms.) SIGNED BY RITCHIE on the closing illustration. The "Mirrors" side of the book was set in type by Patrick Reagh and printed on an Albion hand press by Ward Ritchie. The piece first appeared in the August 1913 issue of "The Smart Set," and is Jeffers' only published short story. Book has gilt lettering on both covers and the spine. As new (WR 32). Also: Filed along with the book are ALS/TLS letters between Ritchie and Mears from 1993 and 1994 that discuss Mirrors and the Mears collection.

Description:
(Laguna Beach, Ca: Laguna Verde Imprenta, 1980). First edition. Hodgepodge of unbound PRINTER'S PAGE PROOFS for the exceedingly scarce publication that was issued in an edition of only "nearly fifty copies" and printed on an Albion hand press by Ritchie himself. The text of the book -- which is based on talks given at California State University at Long Beach, Occidental College, and the Zamorano Club of Los Angeles -- is a touching tribute to the printers of Jeffers' poems as well as to Jeffers himself. PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT THE COMPLETE BOOK. It consists of a number of 16 x 10.25" leaves, each one folded to make four pages measuring 8 x 10.25", with the exception of one which has clearly been halved to make two separate 8 x 10.25" leaves. The handmade papers used for printing differ subtly in color, weight and texture and some pages show slight variations in the intensity of the ink. This collection of loose bifolia (and one that's been cut) includes 3 sets of the eight preliminary pages (each… Read More
