Faithful, to her beloved Borders, Anne Hepple lays the scenes of her latest book, Jane of Gowlands, in the hilly country where the Cheviots and Lammermuirs meet. The time is just after the late wars which have wiped out practically all of the Gow family except the fragile but stubborn Jane, her Grandfather, the old book-seller, and her wicked and miserly Grand-aunt, Janet. Both the old people are anxious that Jane should marry a Walter Gow of another branch, but Jane, as a little stubborn child, has fallen in love with a boy a few years older than herself when staying in the hills to recuperate after an illness. He is the son of "a noble but impoverished family" and the affair between the young things is just laughed at and then taken very seriously indeed and the two forcibly parted. Years pass but Jane is one of those faithful beings that nothing can change, her heart is broken over and over again not only through circumstances but unwittingly by Keith, her lover. Through laughter and tears, however, Jane fights her way and Keith comes into his own at last and then - well we see what we shall see!
