From the foreword: "'The work of Jan Tschichold, typographer and type designer’ is the title of the exhibition to which this catalogue is an introduction. Lake other exhibition titles, it says much, but not nearly enough. It illuminates, like the beam of a searchlight, only one part of Tschichold’s work. His achievement was far broader and more complex, and the exhibition tries to bring this out. In an article published for his 70th birthday he was called ‘praeceptor typographiae’. In fact, he was both practitioner and teacher: in his early days in a school, and later through contributions to countless books - including teaching manuals - and articles. many of which had an even wider influence through translation. He was at the same time both teacher and author - and editor as well. And his interest flowed into every comer of graphic design. He designed symbols and letter-headings, posters and, above all books; and in every field he was a master. He was both theoretician and practical designer, recognized in his profession as an authority: he was also an issuer of challenges, a stimulator of controversy. Tschichold was an outstanding personality, recognized as 'the most influential typographer of this century'. Very Good.
