"James Connolly was one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. He was named vice-president of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic, and was Commandant-General of the insurgent forces fighting in Dublin. After the defeat of the rising by British troops, he was condemned to death by the British and executed by a firing squad, at the age of forty-eight, while strapped to a chair because his wounds did not permit him to stand. In his introduction to this volume, Ellis provides, in addition to a compact biography of Connolly, a description of his work and its place in revolutionary thought."
