J. C. Werner Natural History Print, "La Civette" (Civet Cat) From Saint-Hilaire’s "Histoire Naturelle des Mammiferes"

by E. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Frederic Cuvier

  • Used
A. Belin, Paris, 1820; Circa 1820 hand colored lithograph of a civet cat, an original plate from "Histoire Naturelle des Mammiferes," landmark zoological study by most celebrated of French naturalists, Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844), in conjunction with Frederic Cuvier (1773-1838). A formidable work, "Histoire Naturelle" was published over the period 1818-1842, eventually cataloguing well over 500 species of mammals and filling four bound volumes upon completion. The civet, a native of the tropics of South Asia and Africa, was of special curiosity to European high society of the time, as the animal’s musk was the essential ingredient in the manufacture of high quality perfumes. Drawn and colored by Jacques Christophe Werner, lithography by Carel Christian de Last. Sheet size 9 3/4" x 13". Margins trimmed, but remain generously wide. Fine condition, clean, crisp, brilliant, no chips or tears. A single microscopic pale speck in the blank margin at extreme right. Hinged and matted entirely acid free in 12" x 16" size, ready for framing.

The longest running botanical magazine, it is widely referred to by the subsequent name Curtis's Botanical Magazine. Many plants received their first publication on the pages, and the description given was enhanced by the keenly detailed illustrations. The first issue, in… Read More
