Aldershot: Gale & Polden, 1953. 96pp. Six full colour plates, 37 black and white, with further monochrome illustrations throughout text. Original publisher's beige cloth boards lettered in black, with the original tan dust-wrapper. Spine ends a little bumped, the toned wrapper suffers a small loss to the spine top, and some amateur tape repairs on the inside. With a ink gift inscription to the FFEP. Charles 'Snaffles' Johnson Payne (1884–1967) was an English humorist and painter, who's distinctive style focused predominantly on equestrian and First World War themes. After a distinguished career, Payne continued to sketch and turned to producing Christmas cards for friends, and a series of books of his works, of which this is one. . First edition. 4to.

This is the work of Charles "Snaffles" Johnson Payne, an English painter known for his humorous work and for his outstanding draughtsmanship and depiction of the horse in action.
