Philadelphia: John C. Winston, 1952. Hardcover. Very Good/Fair. First edition. Small ownership label of Ian Macauley, some wear to the crown, very good in supplied dustwrapper with a small chip on the front board, a couple of tiny tears and some general wear at the extremities (along with the original tattered, poor dustwrapper). The Dedication Copy Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protégé, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley on the dedication page, underneath the printed dedication which reads: "For Ian From an Elizabethan to a Georgian," the written inscription follows: " - this token of our friendship, until we meet again. Arthur. 19 Sept 1952." Clarke's first published hardcover novel, a story for adolescents. Macauley was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist who also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood's End* while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. Clarke's first hardcover novel, preceded only by *Prelude to Space* (1951), which was issued in paperback as *Galaxy Science Fiction Novel #3*.

Islands in the Sky by Arthur C. Clarke. It is one of his earliest works. Clarke wrote the story as a travelogue of human settlement of cislunar space in the last half of the twenty-first century. This is one of the thirty-five juvenile novels that make up the Winston Science Fiction series that was published in the 1950s for a readership of teenagers. The typical protagonist in these books was a boy in his late teens who was proficient in the art of electronics, a hobby that was easily available to the readers. In this case, though, Roy Malcolm is an expert in aviation, its history, and its technology.
