Map illustrated endpapers, the larger showing the western Mediterranean area and a small map of Yugoslavia and it is small offshore islands. Navy blue coloured cloth boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, by Biro, with brown and black coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Novelisation of the events that occurred to Dr James Rickett and his other compatriots on the small Yugoslavian island of Vis in the years 1944 through to the end of World War II. Vis was an island surrounded by a German occupied territory and was expected to fall to the Germans at any moment. The island was protected by Yugoslavian partisans and 50 commandos. Dr Rickett went there to set up a hospital, and did so, despite red tape, no supplies and little outside help. Bumping and rubbing to the backstrip edges and rubbing to the book corners. Rubbing to the book edges and to the book panels. Faint browning and to the text block edges and light age toning of the internal text. A few marks to the endpapers. Previous owner's name to the top edge of the free front endpaper and to the title page. Rubbing and creasing to the dustwrapper edges and noticeable rubbing to the dustwrapper panels.
