About This Item
George Allen & Unwin, London, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Gary/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: James Scott  Illustrator, Author  Photographer. Map illustrated end pages, showing the greater Pacific region and then the island of Ra'ivavae in particular. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photographs taken by the author and black-and-white drawings done by James Scott. Pale green coloured cloth covered boards with self embossed decoration to the front panel and dark blue coloured titles to the backstrip. Blue coloured tint to the top text edge. In this unique book, the author -- anthropologist Donald Marshall -- describes present-day life on Ra'ivavae, and to explain its roots he brings its colourful past vividly to life. This book is a study of a culture that was overwhelmed by the Western world. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges and a little rubbing of the top book corners and lower book edges. Some patchy sunning to the book panels and noticeable sunning to the backstrip. Light age toning of the textblock edges and pages. The original bookseller's sticker to the lower left-hand corner of the three front end page. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [6], 7 - 301, [3  of which two are further titles from publishing house] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: James Scott  Illustrator, Author  Photographer.
