US: Crown, 1999. Paperback. Good. Galveston, Texas, 1900. Reports of a storm in the Gulf of Mexico are relaye d to Isaac Cline, chief observer of the new Weather Bureau. But storms stay out at sea and veer East to run parallel to the coast normally. This one d idn't ... Isaac Cline was confident of his ability to predict the weather: he had new technology at his disposal, 'perfect science', and, like America itself, h e was sure that he was in control of his world, that the new century would be the American century, that the future was man's to command. Photographic card cover with orange and white coloured titles to the front panel and back strip. On September 8th 1900 a hurricane ploughed into the unprepared port of Galveston, Texas, with a loss of life between 6,000 to 10,000 people. The US Weather Bureau had one of its most dependable meteorologists at the Galveston Station, Isaac Cline, who along with the weather bureau, believed that man's ingenuity had tamed nature and that there was nothing to fear. but, "... Fatally, Cline failed to read the signs until it was too late. By then, the bathhouses on the sea-front were being crushed by rolling breakers, children were playing unawares in the rising…
